Opal: Every Colour in One Stone

No other gem holds a rainbow the way opal does. Turn it in the light and it answers with flashes of blue, green, gold and fire, a pattern that belongs to that stone alone.

The Romans believed opal held the virtues of every gemstone at once. Looking into one, it is easy to see why. In a single stone you may find the green of emerald, the blue of sapphire, the violet of amethyst and the red glow of fire, all moving together.

Other gems are prized for one perfect colour. Opal is prized for all of them.

Light, caught in stone

Opal's magic has a name: play-of-colour. Inside the stone are countless microscopic spheres of silica, stacked in near-perfect rows. When light enters, these tiny spheres bend and scatter it into the colours of the spectrum, like light through a prism.

The size and order of the spheres decide which colours appear. That is why no two opals are ever alike. Each one carries its own pattern, formed slowly over thousands of years, and each one changes as you move.

A gem of water and time

Unlike most gemstones, opal is not a crystal. It forms where water seeps through the earth, carrying dissolved silica into cracks and hollows. Over long ages, the water slowly evaporates and leaves the silica behind.

A small amount of that water stays inside the finished stone. It is part of what gives opal its soft, luminous glow, and the reason it asks for a gentle touch.

The October stone

Opal is the birthstone for October, shared with tourmaline. It is also the traditional gift for a 14th wedding anniversary. Through the centuries it has been linked with hope, imagination and creativity: a fitting stone for anyone who sees the world in colour.

Choosing your opal

  • Look for movement. The finest opals show bright play-of-colour from many angles, not just one.
  • Notice the base. A milky white or crystal-clear body lets the colours dance on a light background; it is soft, romantic and easy to wear.
  • Trust your eye. There is no single "best" pattern. Choose the opal whose colours speak to you.

How to wear it

Opal loves simplicity. Let it sit alone at the centre of a ring, or frame it with small floral details so its colours have room to breathe. Opal earrings bring a gentle shimmer close to the face; an opal cuff catches the light every time you move your hand.

Because it holds every colour, opal pairs with almost anything: crisp white linen, soft pastels or the deepest evening black.

Caring for opal

Opal is softer than most gemstones, with a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, and a little care keeps it glowing.

  • Avoid knocks and hard surfaces; take it off for sport and housework.
  • Keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes.
  • Do not soak it or leave it in water. Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry it.
  • Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
  • Store it separately, in a soft pouch, away from harder stones.

Every colour, and still only one of its kind.
